Come September a few more surprises appeared in the garden. In the arbor, spanning the front walkway, long objects appeared. At first I thought they were cucumbers but as they grew, the skin toughened and I realized they were my long awaited gourds . . . or are they? :)

From the front steps, my arbor has really greened up this year. Mostly morning glories, a few coyote gourds and hardshell gourds (?) also grace the expanse.

On closer inspection, you can see why I first thought "cucumber".

The nice thing about using random seeds is that I never know what I'm going to get. Here, these snake gourds (or are they luffahs?) showed up much to my surprise and delight. I hope there's enough time in the warm season for them to mature. We will have to wait to see what other surprises are in store in the gourd garden as the vines die back.
